2005: A defiant Saddam Hussein pleaded innocent as he went on trial in Baghdad on charges of murder and torture during his reign as president of Iraq. And on October 19th, 1966 this British group named after the English slang term for hobos arrived in the U. S. for their first American tour. It didn’t go as well as everybody would have liked. After only two shows, Jeff Beck quit the band – the Yardbirds

The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a super group that had just lost its lead singer who had decided to go solo. They responded with unique approach to the problem which gave them their latest charttopper.

David Ruffin had decided to go it on his own and Motown producer Norman Whitfield made a drastic change in the direction of the group which made it even more successful than it had before. Dennis Edwards had been signed to the label but his career seemed to be going nowhere so he asked to be released from his contract. A few days later he was called to the Executive Offices expecting to get the go ahead. Instead, he was asked to join the group you’re about to hear. After a few “socially conscious” songs they returned to affairs of the heart and today’s 101 number one song of the day which was on top October 19, 1969 gave all five members a turn at singing lead – Here are the Temptations with “I Can’t Get Next to You”
