When today’s 101 number one song was sung on stage during a TV special in the 70’s the decade’s icon of coolness lost his cool and couldn’t perform.
Several celebrities were in the audience for the taping of a show that aired on NBC. Today’s featured singer invited them to join him for the finale and they gladly obliged although one of them had to edited out. That was then LA mayor Tom Bradley who was running for re-election at the time, prompting the network to be concerned about giving his opponents equal time. Another was Henry Winkler who completely choked until it was suggested that he get into character as “The Fonz” Once his coolness was restored, he was able to sing the song that became number one on July 1, 1972 for Neil Diamond “Song Sung Blue”
