Today is International Bikini Day.

The bikini swim suit, created by Louis Reard, debuted on this date in 1946 at a Paris fashion show. It was named for a Pacific atoll where the atomic bomb was first tested.

Today is Dolly Day, marking the birth of Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal successfully cloned from an adult somatic cell.

The ewe was cloned at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, and lived there until her death at age six. Since the sheep was cloned from a mammary cell, one of the stockmen who helped with her birth suggested the name "Dolly," after singer Dolly Parton.

History 101: An important arm of the U. S. Treasury was founded on July 5, 1865, to suppress counterfeit currency -- it wasn’t until 1902 (after the 1901 assassination of William McKinley) that the service began protecting the president – the U. S. Secret Service.

Music History 101: During a sold-out concert 21 years ago today, accidentally this former soccer player turned rock star hit his head on part of the stage set and was knocked unconscious in front of 15,000 horrified fans. It was Rod Stewart.

The 101 number one song of the day was the product of a Canadian who wrote his first song simply because he figured if other people could do it, so could he. (And he did – one of his best is today’s featured song.)

Although the thought didn’t even occur to him until he was about 17. He showed some musical talent when he was quite a bit younger and at 11 he was asked by his school principal to sing over the PA system. But when he heard Bob Dylan he was really hooked. Dylan, he said, “was moving into musical areas where angels feared to tread…getting into areas that no one had ever explored.” Eventually he developed his own style and started churning out songs at a rate of about one a day. On July 5th, 1974 one of those songs was number one in America and it is today’s 101 number one song of the day for Gordon Lightfoot – “Sundown”

Listen for the replay today–caller number 10 wins tickets to the Four Tops in concert at Inn of the Mountain Gods.
