Today is Circus Day

ringling

We mark the first performance of the Ringling Brothers Circus on this day in 1884.  It was formed by four brothers from Baraboo, Wisconsin.

Okay, so here are those lyrics-

Louie Louie, oh no, me gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby.
Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go.

A fine little girl, she waits for me.
Me catch the ship across the sea.
Me sailed the ship all alone.
Me never think I'll make it home.

Louie Louie, oh no, me gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby.
Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go.

Three nights and days I sailed the sea.
Me think of girl constantly.
On the ship, I dream she there.
I smell the rose in her hair.

Louie Louie, oh no, me gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby.
Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go.
OK, let's give it to 'em right now

(guitar solo)

Me see . . .

Me see Jamaica, the moon above.
It won't be long me see me love.
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I'll never leave again.

Louie Louie, oh no, me gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby.
Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go
I said we gotta go now
Let's step on out of here
Let's go!

The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a “one hit wonder” who became a preacher at the tender age of seven years old.

James McCleese was born in Harlem but his parents moved to a farm in rural North Carolina shortly after his birth. He grew up listening to circuit riding and preachers and his natural showmanship led to his moving into the pulpit at that very young age. It was a natural progression to singing gospel music and he began touring the country with a group called the Nightingales. But rock and roll soon took hold and he was hooked. His one big claim to fame would never earn an award from feminist groups but it arrived at number one this week in May, 1963 and by this time he had a new last name: Soul- Jimmy Soul “If You Wanna Be Happy.”
