This morning we started our day hearing a cat meowing high up in a tree outside our studios. Maybe he got there thinking it was feed on birds day.
Today is also Visit Your Relatives Day.
History 101: 1980 Mount Saint Helens in Washington State exploded with the force of ten-million pounds of dynamite killing fifty-seven people and covering nearby cities in volcanic ash -- the mountain lost its top thirteen-hundred feet. The volcanic blast was five hundred times more powerful than the atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima. Here’s a “before and after” photo -
Music History 101: 1978: A movie starring Gary Busey premiered in Dallas. It was the "Buddy Holly Story."
The 101 number one song of the day was one of the earliest compositions written by songwriting legends Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller although it took a few years for it to get going…
but once it did, it seemed like everyone wanted to record it. Little Richard did a version and so did Hank Ballard who wrote the Twist. Later, the Beatles did a cover which they included on the British album, “Beatles for Sale” The song was written in 1952 but the year it really took off was 1959 when there were no fewer than six different released almost simultaneously. But by far, the most successful of the releases arrived at number one on this day of that year and it was recorded by Wilbert Harrison – Kansas City
other stuff:
Congratulations to Don Gorske of Fon du Lac, Wisconsin…who ate his 25,000th Big Mac yesterday. Apparently he has obsessive-compulsive disorder, which must help a lot. He’s eaten two Big Macs a day since 1972 – and claims he only missed eight days in 39 years. And he’s kept a receipt for every Big Mac he’s purchased. He also says his cholesterol is in great shape – although his taste buds are shot.
Meanwhile…nearby at the Santa Teresa border crossing…American border agents a nabbed a smuggler. In a secret compartment under the back seat of a car…the agents found 385 pounds of bologna. Officials at the New Mexico crossing say it’s one of the largest bologna busts in our state’s history. Apparently – and we admit we didn’t know this…it is illegal to smuggle foreign bologna into the US – with officials worried it could bring foreign disease into the America’s pork industry.
-Apparently what tipped the border agents off…the guy was driving the Weiner-Mobile.
