Speaking of kids, we had a visit from Tony Trujillo this morning. Mr. Trujillo is the Executive Director of Avance New Mexico. AVANCE’S Mission is to unlock America’s potential by strengthening families in at-risk communities through effective parent education and support programs.
They are having a HeART auction this Saturday a Peace Lutheran Church, 1701 East Missouri Avenue in Las Cruces beginning at 1 pm where over 100 beautifully decorated 11 inch wooden hearts by local artists will be on display.
A silent auction will be conducted throughout the afternoon. Admission to the event is $5. You might just find the perfect gift for Mothers’ Day.
History 101: The crew of the "HMS Bounty" mutinied against Captain William Bligh on this date in 1789. Three-thousand miles from land, Bligh and eighteen others were set adrift in a lifeboat. In one of the most remarkable voyages of all time, Bligh navigated the overloaded, twenty-three foot boat thirty-six hundred miles to the island of Timor. The story became a popular book -
and was made into a movie on a number of occasions.
Music History 101: 43 years ago tonight a rebellious play which featured full nudity opened on Broadway. It was "Hair."
The 101 number song of the day is a song which is tied for the shortest title ever to make it to the top. What’s more, it featured one of the shortest lead singers to rule the Hot 100. It was produced by former schoolteacher Freddie Perren and this particular song sounded just like a lesson in class. And that’s the way Perren approached all his recording sessions saying, “To produce the way I produce, there is an element of teaching because you have to teach them the song the way you want it sung, so they know it before they begin to express it themselves.” And in this case, the group was made up of five kids who were still in school – including the diminutive lead singer. It was number one on April 28, 1970 for the Jackson Five (ABC)
