Music History 101:  While celebrating his birthday by shooting pop bottles with a pistol, this singer accidentally shot his bass player Norman Owens in the chest on this day in 1976. It was “the Killer” Jerry Lee Lewis.

The 101 number one song of the day was the result of one word scribbled on a piece of paper by a former member of a polka band who later played coffee houses with Frank Zappa.  His name was Terry Kirkman who wound up selling business forms in Hawaii where he met up with a sailor named Gary Alexander. Eventually they returned to the mainland and formed a 13 member group called “The Men.” Unfortunately, the men didn’t get along all that well and after an argument, seven walked out. They were left to think of a new name and considered “The Aristocrats.” Kirkland’s wife Judy wanted to get a precise definition of the word and when going through the dictionary came across a word in close alphabetical proximity which they liked better. Another word that Terry had written on a piece of paper led to their first number one song. Three weeks he completed the song which on September 29, 1966 led all other in America for the group now known as “The Association” and that word was: Cherish

101 Gold Nugget of Knowledge: Singapore just ran a competition called ‘Happy Coffins’. 730 artists from 37 different countries designed and decorated coffins which the country said was to encourage the elderly and dying to celebrate life. The organizers said when thinking about the taboos surrounding death – they want people to think – ‘outside the box’.

Here’s a weird sign of a sick economy – according to the Census Bureau 2009 will have the lowest number of weddings in over 100 years. Apparently people are too beat up by the economy to get married. In fact, only 52% of adults over 18 reported that they were married – down from 57% in just ten years.

-Sounds like instead of saying ‘I do’…more people are saying, ‘I can’t…’

Have you ever looked at the sky…seen a plane flying by and wondered where it was going?  Well – there’s an app for that! A new plane finder app – you point your i-Phone at the plane and the screen displays the plane’s altitude, where it came from, where it’s going…and flight number and how fast it’s traveling.

-We’d also like to know what movie they’re showing…and if Steven Slater is the flight attendant.

Switching to permanent grocery bags and foregoing the disposable plastic can save the planet. And maybe kill you. It turns out those permanent cloth or plastic bags are a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria. Experts say you should wash your reusable bags often so you don’t get sick. But they interviewed hundreds of shoppers and found nobody washing their bags.

-What they need is some kind of disposable plastic bag that you can put inside your cloth bag…to keep the food safe. And then when you got home…you could take the plastic bag out of your cloth bag and throw it away.  Maybe not.
