Music History 101: 1997:  In Bologna, Italy, Bob Dylan wore a white cowboy hat for a concert audience that included Pope John II.

He sang “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.  The Pope wore a white hat also.

He usually did.

The 101 number one song of the day was written and performed by the same guy who wrote “Sugar, Sugar” for the Archies.  But afterwards, he fell on hard times until several years later when he achieved his biggest success with today’s featured song.  Andrew Joachim was born to Lebanese parents who emigrated to North America in the early 1900’s. But after some initial writing and recording success his chart career turned as cold as the Canadian winter where he grew up. He decided to form his own label calling it Ice records. He financed the recording session for today’s song  himself. He could only afford to cut two sides and because he considered the song to be so good, he included an instrumental version of it on the flip side. It took 14 long weeks to get to the top but on September 28, 1974 it finally got there. By this time he had started using a shortened version of his birth name  – Andy Kim.  And the song: “Rock Me Gently”

Other stuff:

The President was on The Today Show yesterday talking about education. He made a push for a longer school year saying the school calendar summer gap puts American students at a disadvantage in the global economy. He said the school calendar was originally conceived when we were a nation of farmers and families needed the kids home in the summer to help with the harvest. But he said that doesn’t make sense in today’s world.

-Of course his comments were immediately blasted…by Sasha and Malia.

Cornell University Assistant Professor of Computer Science Ashutosh Saxena is working to bring robots into homes and offices to do mundane jobs. He leads Cornell’s Personal Robotics Lab, which develops software for complex, high-level robotics. Among the lab’s goals are programming robots that can clean up a disheveled room, assemble an Ikea bookshelf and load and unload a dishwasher – all without human intervention. “Just like people buy a car, I envision that in five to 10 years, people will buy an assistive robot that will be cheaper or about the same cost as a car,” Saxena said.

If you think LOL (Laugh out loud) and POS (Parents over shoulder) are all the text chat codes you need to know to figure out what your kid is talking about, think again. What if you saw “I want a Ben and Jerry’s” or “Is Lori in town?” Most parents would assume their teen wants ice cream or is looking for a friend named “Lori.” But they’d be wrong. “I want a Ben and Jerry’s” means “I want ice or crystal meth” and “Is Lori in town” means “Is there any Lorcet?” (a narcotic painkiller), According to Dr. Robert W. Mooney, addiction psychiatrist for Willingway Hospital, it is imperative for parents to have their eyes wide open to code names for illicit drugs as part of their diligence in helping to prevent drug abuse among today’s youth.

Texting

Other translations for common drug-related teen text talk:

· “Has anyone seen Tina?” – Another code for crystal meth.

· “What you know ‘bout them trees?” – Code for pot or marijuana.

· “U seen that white girl?” – Code for cocaine.

· “U seen elvis and blue suede shoes?” – Code for blue Lorcet or prescription painkillers.

· “Elvis has left the building.” – The drug dealer is gone.

· “Are you coming to pick up the girls or the boys?” – A drug dealer asking if teen wants cocaine or heroin, respectively.

· “The eagle has landed.” – Code for drugs are ready for pick-up.

· “I’m fixing a BLT” – Code for “I’m fixing a blunt” (marijuana).

· “I want a Bean Burrito” – Code for “I want Ecstasy.”

The 101 Gold Nugget of knowledge: U.S. telephone engineer Edward Pimentel won 1 million dumplings for his performance at the World Karaoke Championships in Moscow. The Albuquerque resident won the dumplings for singing R&B standards, but he didn’t win the contest outright; he was named “audience favorite.” Assuming he can cram down 100 dumplings a day, every day, which is highly unlikely, Pimentel has enough to last him 27 years! Winners of the Karaoke World Championship are Sam Moudden in the men’s division and Maria Saarimaa-Ylitalo in the women’s division. Both are Finns.

Even gators need a little love. Glenn Berger just wishes it wasn’t him. He says one of his worst days as the Golf Ball Man came when an amorous alligator climbed onto his back. Berger collects golf balls from the ponds on Florida courses. He says gators are one of the hazards of his profession. He said he scrambled out of a water trap, leaving the love-sick gator behind. The incident left Berger with a great story and about 4,000 golf balls. Some were worth only a few cents, but about 600 were Titleist Pro V1s and worth about $2 each, even though they were used.
