Today is International Day of Peace Day

How about a negative response?  We’re just wondering.

Today is also Observe the Speed Limit Day, a day to slow down and see if you can drive legally for 24 hours, and then declare yourself a Law-Abiding Citizen.

And World Gratitude Day. For what are you most grateful?  Think about it.

And today is Throw Away Something Day. Or give away something if you prefer. It's a day to reduce the clutter in your life.

History 101: 2004: Yusuf Islam, was taken off a London-to-Washington United Airlines flight because his name had appeared on a government "no-fly" list. Yusuf was once known as singer Cat Stevens.

The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by two brothers from Brooklyn, N.Y. who got to the top with an instrument much more at home in Nashville than in New York City.  Santo Farina learned how to play the steel guitar when he was only nine years old. His brother Johnny mastered the rhythm guitar when he was twelve. The two were popular in school where they played for dances and parties. And they lived around the corner from where Mike grew up. On September 21, 1959 there’s was the number one song in the land: Santo and Johnny (Sleepwalk)

Other stuff:

Doctors in Cedar Rapids, Iowa rushed a man into emergency surgery after discovering a worm had taken up residence…in his eye!! Yikes! The man reported spots in his vision and once doctors found the worm, they used laser blasts to kill the intruder. The man said he could see it inside his eye - trying to dodge the laser blasts. He believes he picked up the parasite either on a trip to Mexico…or turkey hunting. An Animal Planet film crew taped the story for a show.

Shelby Marwan Heggs of Macon, Georgia, admits he’s sinned many times, but he hopes his past won’t keep a judge from allowing him to change his name to Saint Jody Almighty Bedrock. Heggs, who is facing an aggravated battery charge next month, said he’s rededicated his life to God and wants the world to know. He figures changing his name to Saint Jody is a good way to do it. The Bibb County District Attorney’s Office is opposing Heggs’ request on grounds he may be using it to try to hide his criminal record. A name change can be denied on that basis. However, Heggs said he isn’t trying to hide from anyone. Meanwhile, the aggravated battery charge stems from a fight with his neighbor.

Speaking of which…remember this show?

You’ve likely heard about the mascot fight between the Bobcat and the Buckeye, but there’s more to the story. Brandon Hanning, formerly known as Ohio University’s Rufus Bobcat, said “It was actually my whole plan to tackle Brutus when I tried out to be mascot. I tried out about a year ago, and the whole reason I tried out was so I could come up here to Ohio State and tackle Brutus.” And that’s exactly what he did Saturday, wrestling Brutus to the ground in front of 105,075 college football fans at Ohio Stadium. Ohio State got even in the end, trampling the Bobcats 43-7.

There is nothing worse than a bad-fitting bra. Well, shoes, maybe, but that's another story. Earlene Moore, with 65 years of experience in the retail clothing business, is ready to come to the rescue. After decades of fitting bras, Moore knows everyone isn’t a 34B. The 90-year-old is still helping customers find the right fit at Saks Fifth Avenue in Austin, Texas. Moore doesn’t even need a tape measure. She says she sizes up her customers by “eyeballing” them. Moore says the biggest bra she’s ever fitted was a 44-DDD.

Leonard Skinner, the gym teacher who inspired the Lynyrd Skynyrd name, has died. Skinner, a former basketball coach and the most famously strict gym teacher in rock and roll history, died in his sleep at a hospital yesterday. He was 77. In a 2009 interview with The Times-Union, Skinner said he didn’t mind it when the band incorporated his name. In fact, he didn’t even remember them when they were in high school. However, the band did remember him, because of his strict rules against their long hair. He was working at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville in the late 1960s when he sent a group of students to the principal’s office because their hair was too long. Those students later formed a band, using a variation of Skinner’s name for their own.
