History 101:

September 14, 1968 -. A cartoon show based on a comic book series premiered on CBS. Studio musicians named after the lead character would record a song which would later become the biggest hit of the year. They called themselves the Archies (Sugar Sugar)

The 101 number one song of the day was the first of many for a group who once auditioned for a job in a bowling alley in New Jersey. They didn’t get the job but they did take something that would stay with them forever – a new name.  The song made them an overnight success. But their distinctive lead singer had been toiling away for over a decade working with first the Varity Trio, then the Variatones and by the time they tried out for the Bowling Alley gig, they called themselves the Four Lovers. While that job failed to materialize, they decided to get something for the effort and so they took the name of the lanes as their new name – The place was called – the Four Seasons and they were on their way to number one – landing there on this week in 1962 with (Sherry)
