Also on this date in history:   When it was founded on this date in 1790, it was called the "Revenue Cutter Service" -- we now call it the US Coast Guard.

On August 4th, 1958, Billboard Magazine introduced the Hot 100, the weekly singles chart that would become the industry standard to determine the best selling, most played records in America. The very first song to top the chart was done by a household name that wasn’t Elvis (Your 101 number one song of the day and the story behind it follows) He was the son of a bandleader who rose to fame in the 30’s and 40’s who married his vocalist. In the 50’s the husband and wife would star in an immensely popular TV show along with their two teenage boys. The younger of the two was driving with a girl who was raving about Elvis who was playing on the radio. Jealous of the attention, Presley was getting, today’s featured artist announced that he would be making a record too. The girl just laughed. But he showed her. He asked his dad if he could sing on their TV show and dad said yes. He chose a cover of Fats Domino’s song “I’m Walkin’” because it contained the two chords he knew how to play on the guitar. And his music career was born. He would have a string of top ten hits and on August 4th, 1958 he had his first number one – Ricky Nelson (Poor Little Fool)

other stuff:

A new study from the University of West Virginia School of Medicine found seven is the magic number…when it comes to sleep. They say seven hours of shut-eye is the optimum sack time. Average any less sleep and you’re at a greater risk for developing heart disease. And if you average eight hours or more…that’s also linked to heart disease.

-Do you ever do that thing on the weekend…I call it ‘catch up sleep’? You lie down for a nap – wake up – it’s Tuesday.

The UN’s agricultural office keeps bugging us on bugs. Now they’re saying if people expect to survive on this planet…we have to start farming insects. They say insects and bugs are a great source of protein…and farming them would produce ten times less methane and 100 times less nitrous oxide than farming larger animals.

-a personal rule. We don’t eat anything that requires you to make a face before you put it in your mouth.

A sad note: Actor Dan Resin died on July 30 of complications from Parkinson's disease. Resin, 79, was known for his portrayal of the well-dressed Tidy Bowl man in commercials for Ty-D-Bol toilet bowl cleaner.

-And apparently in his honor…right before the pall-bearers lift the coffin…they’re going to jiggle the handle.

Be careful – Big Brother is watching. The town of Riverhead, New York is cracking down on unpermitted backyard pools. And they did it in a very sneaky way – the town used Google Earth to scan neighborhood photos – and then fined over 250 families. They say so far, they’ve collected about $75,000 in fees.

-Gees, gotta get home and roll up the Slip n’ Slide…
