National Night Out Tonight

Here in Las Cruces activities will be from 6 – 9 p.m. at the south end of the Downtown Mall. Bring the whole family for a free event filled with games, entertainment and giveaways. It’s a chance to spend an evening outdoors with neighbors and members of local law enforcement agencies and the Las Cruces Fire Department.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized to fight back.
In all, nearly 40-million people in nearly 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world are expected to participate in this year’s “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” On that night, residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outdoors with neighbors and police.

And today is National Watermelon Day.  Remember the square watermelons we were talking about not long ago?

This morning we played the summer camp classic, “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah”

and today’s 101 number one song of the day - although not a comedy song - has something distinctly in common with Allan Sherman’s hit song and it rose to the top on the same day that song was released. (Find out the strange link next.) Two of the founding members of today’s featured group actually met in summer camp seven years earlier. A few months later they formed a quartet called the Latineers. In April 1963 they appeared on a talent show sponsored by a Philadelphia radio station. A label executive heard the group and signed them to Parkway records, the same label that featured Chubby Checker. They wrote and recorded a song but something was missing. When the sounds of birds chirping and waves rolling in were added to some finger snapping they knew they had a hit record – It became number one on August 3, 1963 for the now renamed, “The Tymes” – So Much in Love.

Other stuff.

Dancing With The Stars announces their new line-up of celebrity dancers at the end of the  Month…but there are plenty of rumors. Troy Aikman told friends he’s doing the show.  Jersey Shore’s Mike ‘The Situation’ Serrentino and Bachelorette Ali Tedowsky are rumored be in the show. Mel Gibson’s girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva is said to be in negotiations.  And then there the Deadliest Catch skipper Sig Hansen might be dancing.

-I don’t know about you folks…but I hold mine up to my ear!!!

A Red Cross Chapter in Ohio is running a promotion to spur blood donations. Give a pint of blood and you’ll be entered for a chance to win a new 2010 Nissan Versa…or a custom made buggy. They said they didn’t want to exclude their large base of Amish donors.

-We notice a problem here.  Sorry…but if the horse isn’t included…it’s not a fair deal.
