Why are Fairy Tales so Grimm?

…as in Brothers Grimm. We got to talking today how grisly they are. Then it occurred to us that we couldn’t remember the endings, perhaps because, as kids we just blocked out those nasty details. Or maybe we just fell asleep before the end of the story. Which is just as well because, if we heard the ending, we probably wouldn’t be able to sleep. Not without nightmares anyway.

At any rate, we did get two different endings for Little Red Riding Hood: the first one was that the wolf got locked out of the cottage after being tricked by “Red” and tried to get back in via the chimney and as a result, got burned up in the fireplace. The second ending involved a passing woodsman who killed the wolf, cut it open and out popped grandma – apparently none the worse for the wear.

The 101 number song of the day is a song which is tied for the shortest title ever to make it to the top. What’s more, it featured one of the shortest lead singers to rule the Hot 100. It was produced by former schoolteacher Freddie Perren and this particular song sounded just like a lesson in class. And that’s the way Perren approached all his recording sessions saying, “To produce the way I produce, there is an element of teaching because you have to teach them the song the way you want it sung, so they know it before they begin to express it themselves.” And in this case, the group was made up of five kids who were still in school – including the diminutive lead singer – Michael Jackson. It was number one on April 28, 1970 for the Jackson Five (ABC)

Speaking of the Jacksons…The matriarch of the family is moving several of her grandchildren off the family compound in California over a stun gun incident. Katherine Jackson was granted custody of her late son Michael’s three children – Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II. She also has four other grandchildren living on the property – Jaafar, Jermajesty, Donte and Randy Jr. – children of Michael’s brothers. Jaafar reportedly brought a stun gun into the house and allegedly pointed it at Michael’s children. While the family denies the allegations, the Department of Children and Family Services went to the estate and took the gun. Now Katherine has asked Alejandra Genevieve Oaziaza, who has two kids by Randy and two by Jermaine, to leave by next week. Katherine is putting Oaziaza and her kids in a condo in the San Fernando Valley. Are you kidding? She has two kids with one brother and two with another. Did she get confused? They’re not even twins!

Here she is with one of them:Alejandra-Genevieve-Oaziaza

Here’s some cool news for those of us who might think we’re getting too old to try: A 58-year-old Massachusetts college student is fulfilling a lifelong dream by pitching for the Springfield College junior varsity baseball team. Larry Hasenfus, 58, who has three children older than his teammates, said he decided to try out for the baseball team because he didn’t have the grades to compete in sports during his first tenure in college 40 years ago. Teammates and head coach Mark Simeone said Hasenfus won them over with his skills on the mound.  And apparently he’s willing to take care of the field too!

And finally,

There’s a move around Silicon Valley, California to ban toys inside Happy Meals.

Officials are worried the toys lure small children into eating fattening and unhealthy food. They say if we ban toys inside Happy Meals…we’ll have healthier children. You know what would make a lot more sense? If we could work out some kind of deal…where, uh – maybe each small child would have an older person that would be responsible for their behavior. You know, like a guardian or an authority figure that could kind of steer each child through these kinds of situations.

Don’t Forget: There’s another round of Swap or Stop today at 4:15. Here’s one of the questions –
