Yikes!
There are Tea Party protests planned throughout the country including one here in Las Cruces this afternoon in Young Park starting at five. Former congressman Steve Pearce will be in attendance.
Here’s a nice picture from an earlier Tea Party you might recall.
Thanks to NMSU President, Dr. Barbara Couture for stopping by 101 Gold this morning to tell us how her new job is going.
Retention was a very important issue with the Board of Regents and if Dr. Couture stays in the job five years she gets a $500,000 bonus on top of her annual salary.
She was asked if either University of Nebraska comes calling, or for that matter, her alma mater, University of Michigan, she’s staying put here in Las Cruces. Time will tell. We hope – stability at the top is very important. If you missed our conversation or would like to hear it again, click on the link below:

Speaking of NMSU, it was the topic of a Level Two question in SWAP OR STOP, i.e. “Who is the Aggies Athletic Director? Contestant Bill Burrell answered, correctly, that it is Dr. McKinley Boston.
Bill opted to STOP and he won a Lexmark 3-in-1 printer.
The 101 number one song of the day was sung by a guy whose two passions were baseball and music. When he went to Auburn University he discovered that his 120 pounds of body mass was not enough to make to the major leagues so when one of the greatest voices in the history of rock and roll asked him to go on the road as an opening act his threw down his bat and picked up his guitar. Roy Orbison heard him play when he was a sophomore and offered him the job. He toured with Roy for two and a half years eventually joining him onstage singing harmonies. But all the while he was writing his own stuff and when they started to chart, Orbison graciously let him go his own way but assured him the door was open for him to come back if things didn’t work out. But they did work out, especially when he came across a song written by Bobby Russell who would later write a song for his then wife Vickie Lawrence. That was the “Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.” Today’s song was inspired by a tree in Russell’s front yard. One day he looked out and he was shocked to see “how big it had grown” The song flowed from there and it was riding atop the music charts at number one on this day in 1968 for Bobby Goldsboro. The song is “Honey.”
Here are some of today’s tidbits:
The leaders of the St. Louis-based American Mustache Institute are pushing for a tax cut for mustached Americans. Their thinking is sound – everybody else is getting a tax break – how about people with mustaches? They want a $250 tax credit – to be used for grooming supplies and mirrors. Consider it an energy credit…for your lip-warmer. Now here’s a picture of a guy who deserves some sort of credit for his ‘stache –
Here’s a new trend in America – ‘cutting the cord’. Nearly 800,000 people have dropped their cable or satellite TV service – and are watching their favorite shows ‘over the air’ with antennas or video downloads off the Internet. Experts admit it’s just a drop in the bucket now compared to wired viewers…but it is a trend. And by the next year – they say over 1.6-million people will cut the cord. -I know…television coming into your house…through the air!?!? What kind of freaky, new-fangled technology is this???
As long as we’re on the subject -scientists are now warning that 3-D television might be bad for us. They say people that shouldn’t watch 3-D TV include children under six, teens, seniors, pregnant women and anyone buzzed on alcohol. Some of the problems they cite include motion sickness and lingering depth perception problems.
And finally, Pamela Anderson is denying rumors that Dancing With The Stars producers has a showdown with her and demanded she wear underwear on the show. She says there was no such confrontation – she knows to wear underwear.
Remember we told you yesterday, she Pam has, apparently, failed to pay her California state income tax. They just placed a lien against her…for almost $500,000.
-Maybe she can’t afford underpants!!
