a day to give them a break by not fishing.
Mike even avoided taking his fish oil pill today!
Today is also Family Day:
A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children. Family meals are a time for togetherness and fun, but they also play an integral role in psychological development. The sitcom families that dined together in such television classics as “Leave it to Beaver‘ and “Ozzie & Harriet” knew something that research is proving to be true. Family dinners are good medicine and dining together with family members has definite mental health benefits. Family meals are happily making a comeback, with approximately 90 percent of families dining together at least 4 or 5 times each week.
And it’s Johnny Appleseed Day.
Johnny Appleseed was not a crazy guy planting apple trees all over the Midwest for no reason. Cider was the most important liquid in the day – and Appleseed was planting orchards where he thought towns would spring up…knowing the town’s people would pay him for the use of his apples. He got very wealthy this way.
-Okay – he was still crazy with a pot on his head….but, crazy like a fox.
1960 - The first of the presidential debates between hopefuls Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy took place. The debate, moderated by Howard K. Smith, reached more than 69 million people via TV and another 17 million on radio.
Interestingly, those who watched on TV generally thought Kennedy won the debate but radio listeners thought Nixon prevailed.
1956: In Tupelo, Mississippi it was declared “Elvis Presley Day”
The 101 number one song of the day was never finished and wasn’t supposed to be a hit – but it was for a guy who had the Mamas and Papas as back up singers.
The writers recorded a rough vocal so the singer could hear it before the final mix. A copy of that version got into the hands of a record label executive who turned over to a guy who worked for LA radio station KFWB. Within hours, the song, which was supposed to be a flip side to another – as yet undecided – song – was playing on the air and while the head of the record company was furious, it was too late. But nobody else seemed to care and the record was on its way to number one where it sat on September 26, 1965. Today’s featured singer had introduced the Mamas and Papas to the record label president who signed them and their first duties were to sing back up vocals for the man who got them their first contract. That earned him a mention in their autobiographical song “Creeque Alley” but after the song you’re about to hear, he never had another hit – Barry McGuire (Eve of Destruction)
European scientists say they have been able to shoot tiny sub-atomic particles –faster than the speed of light. That’s world-changing, because Einstein’s theory of relativity says no material object can move faster than light – because it would then become energy. The experiment in a particle accelerator shot neutrinos just 20-parts per million faster than the speed of light…barely a blip. But they say – this seems to prove that time travel could be possible.
Can you imagine traveling through time? You could stop wars…save people about to die…you could tip off doctors and scientists what they’re missing to help spur medical and scientific breakthroughs. Of course – you may want to travel to Friday – get the winning lottery numbers…and then come back to buy a ticket.
