The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a group that had the Beatles and Cass Elliott of the Mamas and Papas to thank for getting them together.

Two of the founding members were watching TV with Mama Cass when the Beatles made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. They were blown away and spent hours afterwards playing music together. Right then and there, their eventual leader decided to follow in the footsteps of the Fab Four and put together his own four man band. But follow up on that plan was somewhat sporadic and it might never have happened were it not for Cass who when she ran in to one always mentioned that the other was interested in playing with him again. When she ran into the other she’d relay essentially the same message. Finally they got serious and did form the band which went on to record several hits including today’s 101 number one song of the day which was on top of the charts on August 12, 1966. The two founding members were Zal Yanovsky and John Sebastian who formed the Lovin’ Spoonful and the song: Summer in the City
