No, not that Pluto. Pluto the planet was demoted to dwarf planet status on this day 5 years ago. Former NMSU professor Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930 and then on August 24, 2006 a group scientists agreed it was too small a heavenly body to qualify as a full sized planet. To that we say-
It’s also National Waffle Day…
Mmmm. We celebrate this day in 1869 when Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, NY patented the first American version of the waffle iron.
Here’s a interesting tidbit – the inventor of the first Nike sneakers was inspired to come up with his design while staring at a waffle iron.
Eventually he figured it would be more effective to put the waffle pattern on the soles.
Music History 101: 1968: Rocker Keith Moon of The Who drove a car into the swimming pool at the Holiday Inn in Flint, Michigan. He was driving a Lincoln by the way.
The 101 number one song of the day was the fifth time the group topped the charts in America but despite their previous success, they were virtually broke. So in order to reverse their fortunes they embarked on what would be the most expensive tour of shows to date with tickets ranging from $4.50 to $7.50. The result was scathing criticism…
One columnist wrote, “Can they really need all that money?” He went on to declare that it proved that the group despised their audience. Can an act such as this sustain audience loyalty over the years despite their apparent greed according to others? Apparently so, because the song that leapt off their latest album and was number one in America on August 24, 1969 belonged to the Rolling Stones – “Honky Tonk Women”
