History 101: 1979: President Jimmy Carter absolved Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who had treated John Wilkes Booth’s broken leg, of any responsibility in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Mudd’s name was no longer mud.
1965 –When this man appeared on stage at the Newport Jazz Festival with an electric guitar, he was not well received. He was booed and hissed by the audience for being amplified. He was, in fact, booed right off the stage. It was Bob Dylan.
The 101 number one song of the day is about a love triangle and was recorded by a group with a name that sounds like a city but they actually named themselves after a “cocktail.”
The original members grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey and a third place finish in a talent show at the famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem led to a record contract. They were originally known as the “Dulcets” but as one of the group’s members commented, “it didn’t sound that exciting. Dulcet means melodic tones but how could you explain that to the public?” Well, some people might know that but they wanted a new name and since Dulcet is also the name of a cocktail they continued with that theme and it led to their new name – which graced the label of their biggest hit which was number one on this day – June 25th in 1976 for the Manhattans “Kiss and Say Goodbye”
