The 101 number one song of the day was the last of its kind. There were 19 of these before but there would never be another after this one. And it was released over the objections of it creator.

Only two of the four members of this group were in the studio for its recording. It was sung as a solo, backed only by a piano and bass guitar. It was then forwarded to Phil Spector who dubbed in a violin and horn section and then added choir. When the song’s writer heard the final version, he was stunned. He hated it and tried to get ahold of Spector to demand that it be restored to its original version. He was unable to get that done and the record was released over the most strenuous objections of – Paul McCartney. Nevertheless it became the Beatles’ 20th and last number one song this week in June 1970 – “The Long and Winding Road”
