It is also Biographers Day.
Speaking of biographies, Mike is currently reading “The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin” by Gordon S. Wood. Very good. Which led KC to tell this story: Ben was doing his experiment with electricity but was having trouble getting his kite aloft. His wife said, “how about a little tail?” And Ben said, “That’s what I said to you this morning and you told me to ‘Go fly a kite!’”
History 101: May 16, 2000: The New York Democratic Party nominated First Lady Hillary Clinton for the U.S. Senate, making her the first First Lady to run for public office.
1965: The Beach Boys appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and sang their hit "Help Me, Rhonda.
The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a woman who wanted to write songs; not sing them but because she couldn’t read or play music her life took a different turn.
She took some samples of her stuff to a producer for Tamla records but the only way to demonstrate the songs was to sing them. He loved what he heard and told her she should sing them herself and he signed her to a contract on the spot. But she was disappointed to hear that the contract would not be for Tamla but for a new label he was forming. He was Berry Gordy, Jr. and the new label was Motown. On May 16, 1964, a song written not by her, but one of Motown’s other early signees, Smokey Robinson, became the company’s first record to reach the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 – for Mary Wells – “My Guy”
And if you have a dog that lives to “fetch” a ball (Like Mike’s dog Sammy) you’ll get a kick out of this.
