Today is 8-Track Tape Day

We thought they were so cool!

eighttrack

Originally called the Stereo 8, it was created in 1964 by a consortium led by Bill Lear of Lear Jet Corporation, along with Ampex, Ford, Motorola and RCA Victor Records, and was made popular by the inclusion of 8-track players in Ford automobiles in 1965.

The Lear jet was slightly more high tech.

In what was, literally, the 11th hour Friday night an agreement was reached regarding the federal budget which narrowly averted a Government shutdown.  Many Las Cruces breathed a sigh of relief.  Not everyone is happy with the results, however.  We spoke with Congressman Steve Pearce from his office in Washington and here’s the conversation:  http://www.3592.com/onlinedb/kvlcfm/audio/steavepearce041111.mp3

So anyway…what did he have in his shirt?

Thanks to LWD contestant Paul Couture for stopping by today with his NMSU dance partner Ariel Freilich.  Paul has to be one of the favorites since he and his wife, NMSU President, Barbara Couture have been known to take to the dance floor more than once.

Music History 101: A Minnesota born folk singer named Robert Zimmerman made his professional debut in New York's Greenwich Village at a club called "Folk City" on this day in 1961. He was paid about $5 – Bob Dylan

101 Number One Song of the Day almost never got written at all because the writers thought it was just a copy of something they already did.  The duo of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil were asked by producer Phil Spector to come up with a follow-up song for the pair of artists who had taken another one of their songs to the top. They started writing the song you’re about to hear and then stopped. Too much like the other song, they said. So the project was abandoned. Later, the singers’ contract was sold by Spector to MGM and one of them was set to produce their first project for their new company. He remembered the abandoned song and convinced Mann and Weil to finish it. They did, and they wound up being very pleased with the final product which was number one on April 11, 1966. The song they felt they were copying was also a number one – that was “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’” so that’ll tell you it’s the Righteous Bros. And today’s 101 Number One song of the Day is this – (You’re My) Soul and Inspiration.
