Have a Bad Day Day

It’s for all grouches who can’t stand being told constantly to have a nice day.

Hey, it’s Friday!!!  How can it be a bad day?  Especially after gazing at this next picture-

Meet Zee Zee who is currently living at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley at 3551 Bataan Memorial West in Las Cruces.  She is spayed and ready to go to a good home.  Very sweet, playful and loving.

History 101: November 19th, 1863: U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address on a Civil War battlefield in Pennsylvania.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Music History 101: November 19th,1955: at Sun Records in Memphis a song often associated with Elvis was first recorded. The single hit #4 in the nation four months later for Carl Perkins – Blue Suede Shoes.

The 101 number one song of the day was a true case of life imitating art. And it was recorded by a mother and stepson who barely knew each other until they started working together.  It reached number one two months to the day after the TV show debuted for which it was created. In the show, Mom is asked to help her kids out after they form a garage band. The song goes to number one and the rest is Hollywood history and true life history as well. The mom had married the lead singer’s dad. The son, however, had lived with his natural mother until he was cast for the role in the TV show. The producers were hesitant to tell the woman who was cast at the series mom because they had no idea of what kind of relationship they had. In truth, they had virtually no relationship until their TV family was created and they became close as adults. The song reached number one this week in 1970 for Shirley Jones, David Cassidy and the rest of the “Partridge Family” (I Think I Love You)

This Sunday it’s the 30th Annual Toys for Kids Parade in Las Cruces, NM

30 years ago, a few guys strapped some toys onto their motorcycles, took a ride, and donated the toys to some needy children. This small group eventually became over 2,000 strong. This year, the Toys for Kids Motorcycle Parade, or Toy Run, as it is commonly referred to, will take place November 21, 2010. The streets of Las Cruces will once again come alive with the roar of chrome pipes and the sight of hundreds of leather clad bikers with dolls, stuffed animals, toy cars, and baby toys strapped to handle bars, sissy bars and held by passengers.

The parade will depart from the Mesilla Valley Mall, heading south on Don Roser, west on Missouri, north on Valley and west on Picacho to Dickerson’s Event Center. There the participants will be entertained by Roadhouse, a local band, receive a barbeque dinner and drinks, and can shop local vendors and vote for their favorite motorcycle in the bike show. The festivities also include a grand prize drawing from Las Cruces Motorsports, 50/50 and leather jacket raffles, silent auction and plenty of door prizes.  The cost to participate is $10 plus a new toy costing $7 or more per person. Educational toys are encouraged.  At Dickerson’s it a big party.  Jack Lutz will be on hand to introduce the band.
