Music History 101:  October 25, 1964:  This band appeared on the Ed Sullivan show and provoked riotous scenes in the audience prompting Sullivan to declare: “I promise you – they’ll never be back. It took me 17 years to build this show and I’m not going to have it destroyed in a matter of weeks. Who were they? The Rolling Stones.

The 101 number one song of the day was one of those “B” side records that disc jockeys preferred to the side that was supposed to be the hit. The “A” side was a Neil Diamond composition called the “Boat that I Row” and both sides were sung by the girl dubbed, “The Scottish Brenda Lee.”  Her name is Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie whose stage name was suggested by her manager but only after hours of rejecting many different choices. Finally out of frustration, she was about to give up with the words, “I’ll tell you one thing, she’s a real lulu of a kid.” It stuck and on October 25, 1967 she owned the number one song in America – which was the title song to a hit movie starring Sydney Poitier in which Lulu also appeared “To Sir with Love”

A guy in England has set a new world speed record…for a wheelchair. Outfitted with a motorcycle engine and a five-speed transmission…the wheelchair hit 70 miles an hour on a straight away. The inventor admitted the run was quite scary…noting a wheelchair is pretty flimsy and not designed to reach that speed.

-The previous record for wheelchair speed was set two years ago…when the hospital realized Mike’s uncle didn’t have health insurance….

Chen Wei-yih has posed for a set of photos in a flowing white dress, enlisted a wedding planner and rented a banquet hall for a marriage celebration with 30 friends. But there was no groom. Chen will marry herself. Uninspired by the men she’s met but facing social pressure to get married, the 30-year-old Taipei woman will hold the reception next month in honor of herself. The 30-year-old woman said she is in her prime, she just hasn’t found the man of her dreams. Taiwanese women are marrying later and less often as their economic status advances, fueling government concerns about a drop in the birth rate and its impact on Taiwan’s workforce. Only 40% of women surveyed earlier this year by the government said they could live a better life married than single.
