Music History 101: 1991 - Elizabeth Taylor married Larry Fortensky. It was Taylor's 8th marriage and Fortensky's 3rd. The ceremony was held at an estate near LA. The estate belonged to best man – Michael Jackson

The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a group that lost its name to Paul Revere and the Raiders so they reverted to something they had used when they were barely in their teens.  They took that name from a song they used to sing but a group of record promoters liked the band but hated the name so eventually they decided to call themselves Rick and the Raiders. They did proms, sock hops and local clubs and eventually did some back up work for the Stangeloves who recommended them to one of the founders of Bang records who had a song that needed a group. They got together and released the song which was at number one on October 6, 1965. But this was the same time that Paul Revere and the Raiders were on the rise so they were told to come up with something new. Instead they came up with something old – their original name – The McCoys – “Hang on Sloopy.”  Here’s some vintage video -

The McCoys were headed by Rick D. Zehringer who became Rick Derringer.

Other stuff:

The Peanuts comic strip turns 60 this week – and the Schulz family is doing everything they can to keep the characters alive. After Charles Schulz died in 2002 – the family decided to keep the comic strip alive by running re-runs. They’re also coming out with a new TV special next spring called ‘Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown’…and they’ve signed a five-year deal with ABC to continue airing the existing Charlie Brown TV specials.

peanuts

-Yeah – it was pretty cool to watch ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ with your kids for the first time…telling them you watched it when you were a kid. Now you’re watching it with your grandkids!!!

A woman in Arizona was recovering at home from cataract surgery. But one day she thought she was putting in her eye drops…when she grabbed a bottle of Super Glue. She had to be rushed to the hospital for the doctors to open her eyes back up. Now they’re looking at ways to force glue manufacturers to put their product in a container not easily confused with eye-drops. The doctors say this happens a lot more than you’d imagine.

-One idea might be…don’t keep your Super Glue next to the Visine. Sounds kind of obvious.

Neanderthal man is getting a reputation make-over. Scientists now admit Neanderthals were probably more clever, more adaptable and better looking than we general give them credit for. They’ve long been considered inferior to modern humans…and that’s the reason most people think they died off. But now new science says Neanderthal was probably a lot smarter and held his own against humans. In fact, they mingled with humans, too…with up to 4% of the human genome in Europe and Asia having Neanderthal genes.

neanderthal

-Yeah – humans with European ancestry…4% of your genes comes from Neanderthals.  Which – when you think about it – explains the Jerry Springer Show.

A new poll from “60 Minutes” and Vanity Fair has named Jennifer Aniston the most eligible bachelorette of 2010. Aniston has had a string of high profile relationships in recent years, but continues to get attention for her single status.

With all due respect to the newest member of the Supreme Court, she has to be wondering how she got on a list of “Hollywood Bachelorettes.”   Is she sending a not so subtle message to the pollsters?
