It was Paul McCartney.  Speaking of the Beatles, they also did a version of today’s

which was a case of history repeating itself. For the third time in the rock era, a song which had been number one for someone else got to the top of the charts again. It was becoming a habit to do cover songs for the combo you’re about to hear.  The artists had released other singles that were cover versions, but all of them became bigger hits than the originals. Then they released an album called “Now and Then” with a fictional DJ providing the connective tissue. Songs like “Johnny angel” and “The End of the World” prompted some critics to suggest that the lead singer was so well suited to covering pop hits, she should consider doing it more often. What follows was their first single to heed such advice. And on January 25, 1975 it arrived at number one for the second time. The first time it was number one it was recorded by the Marvelletes, this time it was done by the Carpenters (Please Mr. Postman)
