Pluto Day

pluto

Uh uh.  Wrong one.  Here we go -

pluto planet

That’s better.   The ninth planet, no longer accepted as a planet by some, was discovered on this date in 1930 by astronomer Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona.   You can see here how much smaller it is than earth; even smaller than our moon.

Professor Tombaugh taught for many years here in Las Cruces at NMSU.

The Clyde W. Tombaugh Campus Observatory was dedicated in September 1972. The facility houses two Astronomy Department telescopes and one belonging to the Astronomical Society of Las Cruces.

Today being Friday we had a visit from Chad who’s with the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley and he brought along Zim

cat - zim

Zim is a neutered male cat about one year old.  He’s friendly, he’s spunky and he’s homeless.  Can you give him a home?  the ASCMV is located off highway 70 and opens at noon each day.

The 101 Number One song of the day was written by Bruce Springsteen and originally appeared on his debut album “Greetings From Asbury Park.” But it wasn’t the Boss who made it famous.  He did release it as a single but it bombed. It was then recorded by a new band fronted by a keyboard player who had several hits in the 60s but in the 70s he fell on some hard times, musically speaking. But when his new group recorded Bruce’s song he was back on top. It was number one in America on February 18th, 1977 – for Manfred Mann’s Earth Band – “Blinded by the Light.”
