although it will be a bit cool today with the afternoon temperature in the Mesilla Valley not much more than 50.
Get to Know Your Customer Day.
History 101: 50 years ago today John F. Kennedy was sworn in as President of the United States.
Music History 101: January 20, 1973 – This long time hell raisin’ rock ‘n roller made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry. He promised not to play any rock and roll and not to cuss. He broke both promises: Jerry Lee Lewis.
The 101 number one song of the day was released despite the protests of the widow of the man who wrote it. In fact she wanted an injunction against the group that recorded it. Legendary composer Jerome Kern wrote the song for a 1933 stage musical called “Roberta.” The song lay dormant for decades until today’s featured group decided to release a single. Mrs. Kern thought a group associated with rock and roll would somehow defile her late husband’s memory. She had her lawyer contact the song’s publisher Max Dreyfus to seek the aforementioned injunction. What she didn’t know was that it was Max who was pushing for the recording in the first place. After all, songs don’t make money unless someone keeps recording them, and publishers are supposed to keep their inventory active. When it was explained that the record was likely sell over a million copies and that she stood to make some cash, the idea of the injunction was dropped and on January 20, 1959 the song was the number one record in America for the Platters: “Smoke Gets in your Eyes”
The 101 Gold Nugget of Knowledge: A Vice-President of sales at Microsoft took a leave of absence from his job to work on a new project. Patrick McCarthy has created a new line of fragrances that smell like money. They’re called ‘His Money Cologne’ and ‘Her Money Eau de Parfum’. They’re designed to smell like stacks of fresh money. He said he got the idea from a Japanese factory that increased production by pumping the smell of money into the plant. He said somebody wearing his fragrance will be empowered to be successful.
-In other words – ‘stinking rich.’
The Japanese are fascinated by toilets – I don’t know why – but they have cornered the market in ultra-fancy, expensive commodes. Their newest creation is called ‘the Regio’ and is said to combine a well-thought out balance of automated function, comfort, hygienic cleansing and antibacterial technology. When you enter the bathroom, the lid automatically lifts to reveal the pre-heated seat. LED displays inform you what the toilet is doing – which includes playing soothing music, giving you a body-temperature butt-washing when you’re done, purifying the air in the bathroom and then an antibacterial flush – leaving everything super-clean when you’re finished. The Regio toilet…costs $5,900. If you want a designer color – expect to pay up to eight grand!!
