The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a superstar who had 5 previous number ones in America but no charttopper in his own country. For that to happen he needed to bring in some outside help.  That help came in the name of Pauline Matthews from Yorkshire England who was originally signed by Motown Records but after a few failed attempts at the charts she realized her destiny did not lie in Detroit, MI so she returned to Great Britain to resume her recording career closer to home. The superstar she teamed up with was getting fed up with fame (if not necessarily fortune) and was ready to retire from the music business to devote full time to soccer as president of the Watford Football Club. But his retirement was short lived and a collaboration of the two signers was devised and the result was the superstar’s first number one in England – and on August 6, 1976 it was number one in America also – Pauline Matthews had by this time changed her name to Kiki Dee and her collaborator was Elton John – Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart.

Yeah, we hate to say we told you so…but it looks like Brett Favre could be coming back to the Vikings…

According to Vikings’ officials….Brett Favre is still trying to rehabilitate his surgically-repaired ankle…practicing by himself at a high school field in Mississippi. They say if his ankle’s a go…he’s a go. Favre has considered retiring every summer…since 2002!

and the Bristol Palin/Levi Johnston dis-re-engagement…could be a publicity stunt.

Showbiz Tonight thinks the Bristol Palin/Levi Johnston breakup is a publicity stunt. The TV show noted the two have been working on a reality show. And they said Bristol accused Levi of being a ‘fame whore’…but when their painful, personal separation occurred, the first person Bristol called…was the reporter for PEOPLE magazine.

Well – the good news…the President didn’t have to celebrate his 49th birthday alone. His family was on vacation in Spain…so the President flew to Chicago to spend a few days at his Chicago home. His family wasn’t around…but he did have First Dog, Bo…and Oprah Winfrey.

No matter what you think of gun control, this is weird: New rules in the state of Queensland, Australia…where the state government now dictates that all guns must be registered. And that includes toy guns. And all guns, including plastic guns and squirt guns…must be locked safely in the house when not in use.

If you thought the Blue Turf on the football field at Boise State is tough to watch on TV get a load of this:  Students at Eastern Washington University will soon be seeing red on the football field. The school is installing artificial red turf. It will be the first red college football field in the country. EWU hopes to get some publicity yardage out of its unusual stadium. The red field is courtesy of Michael Roos, a former EWU star who now plays in the NFL. Roos donated $500,000 to the project. The first game on the new red turf takes place September 18th against Montana.

This is the story behind the 101 Gold Nugget of Knowledge question this morning: Police in Canada arrested a man accused of breaking into a home and holding a garage sale in its front yard. Investigators said Kail Russell Stokes, who was in custody on an unrelated charge, was identified as the man who allegedly broke in the Sarnia, Ontario, rental home of Greg Kemmis while Kemmis was out of town on June 12th. Police said Stokes sold $40,000 worth of tools and woodworking equipment in the front yard of the home.

Remember when this happened in Las Cruces a few years back?  A county official in Oregon has apologized after a 7-year-old’s lemonade stand was shut down by health inspectors. Multnomah County Chairman Jeff Cogen, the county’s top elected officials, said yesterday that running a lemonade stand is a “classic iconic American kid thing to do.” He says he called Julie Murphy’s mother, Maria, to apologize. Mom said she appreciated the apology. Mom helped her daughter set up the stand last week at a local arts fair in northeast Portland. They had to pack up and leave after being approached by two inspectors who said the stand didn’t have a license. Cogen says that while the inspectors were only doing their job, the rules are meant for professional food service operators.   Here’s little Julie – still smiling – despite her ordeal -
