Disobedience? In this case, it’s Civil Disobedience. A lot of people are protesting in Arizona on both sides of the issue regarding the state’s controversial immigration law. One protester said she took a course in civil disobedience at Arizona State. This country has a long and proud record of civil disobedience as a method to bring about change which goes back to the Revolutionary War. (England’s King George III thought the Colonists were VERY disobedient)
But we were surprised that there is an actual college course teaching it. We couldn’t help but wonder if you pay attention, take notes and are generally obedient during class – do you get a failing grade? In all seriousness, there are many who’ve made a pretty good case for it:
and then there’s this man -
The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a group whose first reaction to the lyrics was “What are they trying to do to us?” They actually were given a choice between today’s song and John Sebastian’s “Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?” which, of course, wound up a big hit for the Lovin’ Spoonful. Despite the fact they thought the words were very corny, they decided to take a pass on Sebastian and go for goofy…although America thought otherwise and so have a number of other musicians who have covered the song over the years including Jimi Hendrix. Here’s the song that vaulted to number one in the last week of July 1966 for the Troggs “Wild Thing”
Other stuff:
We’ve been reading about Chelsea Clinton’s very expensive wedding this weekend. It’s estimated to be costing Bill & Hill somewhere between 2 to 5 million dollars.
How’s this for posh? They’re bringing in port-a-potties to handle the crowd – they’re called the priciest outhouses in town. They’re huge, featuring flushing porcelain toilets, soft music and hot running water. And that’s a port-a-potty, mind you!! Here’s an exclusive peek at one of the six or so units they’ll have on the scene just in case you didn’t get one of the $150 invitations (yep, that’s how much each one cost)
Sure, they’re better than the average, but when you’re at a function that costs $1500 per plate you’re probably expecting indoor plumbing.
Speaking of pricey - a restaurant in New York City made the Guinness Book of World Records…offering the most expensive hot dog ever. The $69-dollar foot-long wiener was introduced to celebrate National Hot Dog Day last month. The all-beef foot-long was smothered in black truffles and foie gras and served on a pretzel roll grilled with truffle butter. It was then topped with heirloom tomato ketchup and truffle mustard.
-And then…of course being New York…you have to eat fifty of them in ten minutes!!!
Now an amazing story about a man who can easily afford $69 hot dogs or for that matter a five million dollar wedding. A house painter in California picked up a box of photographs at a garage sale. He even worked the owner down from $70 to $45 for the box. Now – ten years later…the photos turn out to be originals from Ansel Adams – and the estimated worth…is $200-million dollars!
-Gees, think what those pictures would have been worth…if Ansel Adams would have thought to take some of them in color!!
General Motors is staking a lot of their future on the new Chevy Volt. The all-electric car goes on sale in December…with a base price of $41,000. Fully-loaded versions are on sale for just under $45,000. But GM says buyers do get a $7,500 federal tax credit. The company started taking pre-orders for the Volt yesterday.
-And it’s nice it’s an all-electric car, too. Because after you see the price tag and fall over in the showroom…they can use the car as a defibrillator.
A guy in Bosnia has had six meteorites hit his house since 2007. Experts have confirmed they’re all meteorites although they have no clue why they keep hitting one house. They say the chances of being hit be one meteorite is several billion to one. And this is six times! The man says it’s obvious – he’s being targeted by aliens. -Well – if that’s the case…just be glad you weren’t ‘anal probed’ six times!!
Here’s Radivoje Lajic holding up one of the meteorites -
Oh, great! Here’s another everyday item that can cause premature death. Cash register receipts might be dangerous for your health. A study released by The Environmental Working Group said they found the plastic component BPA on 40% of all register receipts. It’s used to coat thermal paper and is considered toxic. It disrupts the production of the endocrine chemical bisphenol A. They’re now studying to see how this might harm humans.
-And at the same time…benefit lawyers.
