Today is Ladies’ Day

It was on this day in 1883 that ladies were admitted free to a major league baseball game.  For the record, it was the New York Giants

The 101 number one song of the day was the last of its kind. There were 19 of these before but there would never be another after this one. And it was released over the objections of it creator.  Only two of the four members of this group were in the studio for its recording. It was sung as a solo, backed only by a piano and bass guitar. It was then forwarded to Phil Spector who dubbed in a violin and horn section and then added choir. When the song’s writer heard the final version, he was stunned. He hated it and tried to get ahold of Spector to demand that it be restored to its original version. He was unable to get that done and the record was released over the most strenuous objections of – Paul McCartney. Nevertheless it became the Beatles’ 20th and last number one song this week in June 1970 – “The Long and Winding Road”

It’s official…social networking sites on the Internet are now one of mankind’s biggest time sucks. New research shows 22% of all time spent on the Internet around the world…is done on networking sites. The average person spends six hours a month on them. And Americans aren’t the biggest users of the sites – people in Brazil are. They say in the old days, the average person had 20 friends. Today – that average is over 200!!

People with teenage boys at home often worry they’re going to be eaten out of house and home. So researchers did an experiment taking teenagers to an all-you-can-eat buffet. And they found out teenage boys do indeed eat a lot more than girls. In fact, in their study group, the boys ate an average of 2,000 calories for lunch. They found boys ages 14 to 17 in late puberty eat the most – but they also burn off the calories. The researchers say parents of boys shouldn’t be concerned as long as the kids aren’t gaining weight.

Scientists are now mapping Ozzy Osbourne’s genetic code. They say he will be one of the few individuals in the world to have his genetics mapped out. They want to figure out how he survived years of drug and alcohol abuse, saying studying his DNA may offer clues to how the body deals with drugs.

And here’s the story behind the 101 Gold Nugget of Knowledge question:  Police were called to a Topeka, Kansas, hotel on a report of a man using a karaoke machine to put on an impromptu concert in the hallway. An employee at the Regency Inn & Suites called 911 Sunday morning and reported a man using an “amped-up karaoke machine” to sing songs in a hallway. He refused repeated requests to shut up. Police said the man and his karaoke machine were gone by the time they arrived. It was unclear whether he was staying at the hotel.
