In the first six months of 1964 only one American group had a number one song in the U.S. As to which group that was – the answer might surprise you – it’s today’s 101 number one song of the day. They were three black women who were discovered by the famed production and writing team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. They came across a song that was written for the Ronettes by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector. Leiber and Stoller wanted to have their new trio record the song but Phil Spector objected to the idea. No matter – they went ahead with their plan anyway and it became a huge hit – sitting atop the American charts on June 4, 1964 for the – Dixie Cups (Chapel of Love)

Don’t tell the rest of the world as they focus in on the World Cup matches beginning next week in South Africa, but one-out-of-three Americans don’t even know what sport will be played in those games. A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds that 66% of adults correctly identified soccer, or football as it’s known outside the U.S., as the sport played in the World Cup competition. However, 3% say it’s all about baseball, and 1% think the World Cup is a tennis game; 28% aren’t sure what the heck the World Cup is. If the U.S. team advances to the World Cup finals, 62% say they are at least “somewhat likely” to watch, with 36% “very likely” to do so. But even with the American team on the field, 37% say they aren’t very likely to watch any World Cup action. Like the Winter and Summer Olympics, the World Cup games are held every four years. This year’s event will take place June 11-July 11 in South Africa.

Other stuff:

An Illinois father and his twin teenage sons were arrested after brawling about religion. Madison County prosecutors have charged 44-year-old Timothy Neal and his 18-year-old sons with felony mob action. Their bond was set at $30,000 apiece. Authorities say deputies responded to a reported beating early Saturday near Collinsville, where the Neals allegedly pummeled another person during a disagreement about religion and demons. The victim was treated at a hospital for facial injuries. The Neal twins were also charged with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor. For the record – the father’s mug shot shows him wearing a T-shirt reading: “Cleverly Disguised as a Responsible Adult.”

It’s not just the picture of beef on a new billboard in North Carolina that catches drivers’ attention – it’s the aroma coming from the sign. The billboard on N.C. 150 in central North Carolina emits the smell of black pepper and charcoal to promote a new line of beef available at the Bloom grocery chain. The billboard shows a fork piercing a piece of meat. A Bloom spokeswoman says the billboard will emit scents from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day until June 18th. A high-powered fan at the bottom of the billboard spreads the aroma by blowing air over cartridges loaded with fragrance oil.

This morning’s 101 Gold Nugget of Knowledge question was about a woman who was fired for being too – are you ready for this?  Too GOOD LOOKING!  Let’s take a look -

A New York woman has sued Citigroup, claiming she was fired because bosses deemed her beauty to be a distraction for male colleagues. Debrahlee Lorenzana, 33, said in her lawsuit that she was ordered not to wear turtlenecks, pencil skirts, fitted suits or heels in the workplace because the tight clothing made her body “too distracting” for male coworkers. “Never did I ever show cleavage,” Lorenzana said. “I like fashion, but I always dressed professionally.” “I can’t help it that I have curves,” she said. “And I’m not going to go eat and gain 50 or 100 pounds because my job wants me to be the same size as everyone else.” Lorenzana claims bosses at Citi’s Rockefeller Center branch moved her to a secluded part of the office as retaliation for her sexual harassment complaints and then fired her a month later. “All it came down to was, ‘We don’t want to deal with you, because you’re just too good looking,’” Tuckner said. Citigroup said the lawsuit was “without merit.”

There’s got to be something more to this story.  And if we find it, you’ll hear about it on 101 Gold!

Have a great weekend and stay cool.
