Today is Apple Pie Day

And it is Table Knife Appreciation Day. Cardinal Richelieu invented the utensil on this date in 1639. The distinguishing feature of a table knife is a blunt or rounded end.

The origin of this, and thus of the table knife itself, is attributed by tradition to Cardinal Richelieu reputedly to cure dinner guests of the unsavory habit of picking their teeth with their knife-points.

It’s also Root Canal Appreciation Day. As odd as that sounds, if you’ve got an abscessed tooth, a root canal is quite a relief.

Not long ago, we had a story about a phony dentist who used straightened out safety pins for this procedure. That guy is not included in this day of appreciation.

The 101 number one song of the day was written by a team that first met in a dream when one of them was eight years old. Felice Bryant was an elevator operator at a hotel where Boudleaux Bryant was playing a date with a jazz band. When he entered the elevator, she recognized him immediately because she had first seen his face in a dream she had when she was a little girl. They were married soon after and began collaborating in music. He wrote the melody and she wrote the lyrics. One of their songs was recorded by two people who also met at an early age but it wasn’t part of a dream – they were part of the same family and had been performing on the radio since they were kids. And on May 13th, 1958 they were responsible for the number one song in America. “All I Have to Do Is Dream” by the Everly Brothers.

Other Stuff:

Texas is the latest state to consider a major expansion of legalized gambling to help close an estimated $11-billion dollar shortfall in their budget. The plan would add casinos – in the hope taxes generated from gambling would add to the state’s revenue. This is rather ironic because several years ago, the state closed down Speaking Rock Casino in El Paso – with the help of gambling interests in the eastern part of the state – to the devastation of the Tigua Tribe who were, at the time, pouring money back into the city and various charities. Maybe the Tiguas will get another chance.

We’re finally getting normal temperatures here in Southern New Mexico. But did you hear it snowed in Denver yesterday? They were expecting one to four inches, depending on the altitude. -This is an awkward time in Denver. Because they don’t know if this the last snow of the season…or the first snow – of next winter.

They’ve got a problem in Odessa, Texas…where a 16-year old stand-out high school basketball player – turned out to be a 22-year old man from Florida who was a stand-out high school basketball star in Fort Lauderdale five years ago. Two Florida coaches spotted the player at a tournament in Arkansas and blew the whistle on him. After graduating in Florida, he apparently moved to Texas, befriended a high school coach and told him he was homeless. He eventually ended up living with the coach and playing for his team. Now the high school may have to forfeit their entire 2009 season. -It’s kind of like the movie ‘The Blind Side’…with the addition of an actual blind side.

Driving season is right around the corner…and the oil spill in the Gulf has cut domestic production. So analysts are predicting we can expect gasoline prices this summer to go … down!?!?! We don’t get it – but they say the price of gasoline has already peaked near three dollars a gallon – and we can expect it to go lower for the summer.

-Okay – now they’re just messin’ with us!!

And finally…

A Japanese lingerie maker has created a bra that grows rice. The Triumph Bra features pots instead of cups and tubes to bring water to the pots instead of straps. The grow-your-own bra was created to heighten awareness of food self sufficiency.
