No Pants Day

People around the world are invited to go to work without their pants on. Here in New Mexico there is not a lot of participation but elsewhere – like NYC – some people actually do it. Check this out:

It’s also Tuba Day which was created to recognize tubists in musical organizations around the world who have to go through the hassle of handling a tuba. What hassles do tubists have? Tuba players obviously have hassles due to the size and weight of their instruments, but what is actually more of a hassle for tuba players is the prevalence of stereotyped attitudes among people towards tubists and their role in a musical organization. We’re sad that nobody showed up at the 101 Gold studios with a tuba.

On the other hand, we’re happy that Jordan from the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley showed up with the pet of the week. Meadow has a very sweet, calm disposition. Here’s Jordan holding Meadow:

The 101 number one song of the day had a rough road to the top – nobody in the group wanted to record it except its writer and he had no idea what it meant. Producer Lou Adler didn’t like the song either but this group of four was heavily influenced by their de-facto leader John who insisted they record the song before they put their new album to bed. He said to his dying day that he had no idea what the song was all about but he liked it none the less. Although the other three in the group didn’t like it, the public did and radio stations started playing it off the album since it was never intended to be a single. By the time it finally was released as a single, it was so popular that more than 150,000 were sold on the first day. And on May 7, 1966 it reached the number one spot in America – for the Mamas and the Papas (Monday, Monday)

HERE WE GO AGAIN

The stock market plummeted over 1000 points yesterday…

…on what experts called one single faulty trade. Somebody typed in a “B” instead of an “M” followed by “illion.” And all hell broke loose. By the time it corrected, the market finished down only 348 points. Even with the correction – the market has now wiped out all of the gains for the year.

-In related news…Jim Cramer’s head exploded yesterday…

You can’t get White Castle hamburgers here but, no doubt, many of you have tasted them somewhere else.

Some are just crazy about them. But not as crazy as this idea seems – the hamburger chain is now selling White Castle candles. The scented candles are infused with the scent of their burgers.

And each candle comes in a slider sleeve. They say fans can light a White Castle candle… and soon your home smells like the restaurant.

-Or, you can just invite on of their workers over after their shift is done.

Canadians have discovered a beaver dam in northern Alberta that is so big, it’s actually visible from space! They say several generations of beavers have worked on the dam since the 1970’s and it’s still growing. The dam is 2,800 feet long, over a half-mile…and visible to the astronauts at the space station.

-In fact – you know what they said when they first spotted it? Dam!!!

Here’s a look at it although we can’t see any actual beavers in this picture and you’d think we could because, after all, they’re giant beavers but then again we’re looking in from space.

On the subject of our neighbors to the North, the man voted during the Winter Olympics as the most famous Canadian of all time - William Shatner is really rich.  But he almost blew it, BEFORE he had it.  When he first signed to be the pitchman for Priceline.com in 1997 he took company stock as part of his pay. But then the tech bubble burst in 2000…and the Priceline stock price went down to $1.82 a share. He tried to get out of the deal – but they held him to his contract. Now the price is about $300 a share – and Shatner’s stock is worth about $600-million dollars.

No wonder he’s smiling!

And finally, Congrats to the class of 2010 at NMSU whose commencement is tomorrow.

And here’s to you - Moms of New Mexico and everywhere!

Mom was caregiver, nurse, teacher, financial consultant, maid, banker, confidant, chauffer, cook. She supported us, cheered for us…sat through way too many school concerts…and even played good cop to Dad’s bad cop. If that’s not worth a card with a couple of lottery scratch-offs in it…we don’t know what is.
