It’s also No Diet Day
And No Homework Day
And last – but not least – the National Day of Prayer
President Obama signed an annual proclamation last weekend inviting Americans of all religions to pray today, which is National Day of Prayer day. Thousands of events nationwide are being held by the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a private conservative evangelical group that says one of its primary goals is to “publicize and promote Christian prayer.” While Americans are overwhelmingly sure there’s a God who answers prayers, that doesn’t mean they all favor an official annual National Day of Prayer – or even that its goal should be promoting Christianity. According to a USA Today/Gallup Poll:
· 92% of Americans say there is a God; 83% say God answers prayers.
· 57% favor a National Day of Prayer, while 38% don’t care; only 4.5% oppose it. Those who favor a National Day of Prayer the most are Republicans (76%), women 50 and older (71%), Midwesterners (71%), and Southerners (63%).
· When asked if promoting Christianity should be the goal of the National Day of Prayer, 62% said it should and 36% said it shouldn’t.
· Protestants were most strongly in favor of promoting Christian prayer (72%), followed closely by Catholics (70%). People with no religious preference were most strongly opposed (69%).
The 101 number one song of the day was a “Mancunian Hat Trick.” A what? More on that further down. It was recorded by a band whose lead singer was a former child star in his native England. When he turned to music he was much more popular in America. In fact, today’s featured song was never even released as a single in his home country. Now, back to the Mancunian Hat Trick – despite all the hoopla over the “Liverpool Sound” the 101 number one song of the day was the third song in a row from a “Manchester, England” group to reach number one in America and it was there on May 6, 1965. If you’re from Las Cruces, you’re a Las Crucen – people from Manchester are Mancunians. The two previous Mancunian songs were “I’m telling you now” from Freddie and the Dreamers, and Game of Love by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders and now – it’s another bunch of Mancunians: Herman’s Hermits and “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter”
A note about SWAP or STOP…
There was a bit of controversy this morning. We tell contestants off air and on air that first answer counts. Myron was our contestant and sailed right through to level five and was asked the question, “What is the name of the man who quit the tonight Show to eventually be replaced by Johnny Carson?” Myron said, “You broke up there a little bit but I think it’s Jay Leno.” The correct answer is Jack Paar. Unfortunately for Myron (who, when the question was repeated, knew it was Jack Paar.) he did not ask for the question to be repeated but instead, gave the answer which popped into his head first.
It was a tough call but rules are rules. Fortunately for Myron, he can play again in 7 days and YOU can play this afternoon at 5:15. Good Luck!
