…In Swap or Stop…and this afternoon at 4:15 there’ll be a question about Barack Obama which is worth $75.
This is National Bike To Work Week –
The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a woman who wanted to write songs; not sing them but because she couldn’t read or play music her life took a different turn. She took some samples of her stuff to a producer for Tamla records but the only way to demonstrate the songs was to sing them. He loved what he heard and told her she should sing them herself so he signed her to a contract on the spot. But she was disappointed to hear that the contract would not be for Tamla but for a new label he was forming. He was Berry Gordy, Jr. and the new label was Motown. On May 17, 1964, a song written not by her but one of Motown’s other early signees, Smokey Robinson, was the company’s first record to reach the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 – for Mary Wells – “My Guy”
A 16-year old Australian girl became the youngest person ever to sail solo around the world – non-stop and unassisted. It took her seven months to complete the 23,000 mile journey. And now that she’s back on dry land – she said she’s anxious to get her driver’s license.
Meanwhile…your sixteen year old spent the last seven months…texting.
The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico might be cleaned up…by Kevin Costner. Costner’s brother is a marine engineer that has worked with partners to come up with a machine that separates oil from salt water. The team has arrived in Louisiana to demonstrate how it works. And Kevin Costner is with them…as an investor and the group’s spokesperson.
Congratulations to 94-year old Hazel Soares of San Leandro, California. She just received her college diploma. She said it took quite a while to get her degree because she’s had a busy life.
-And just think…in another 76 years…her student loans will be paid.
Last week in Las Cruces there was a lot of softball action with both the state High School championships and the WAC tournament. Hawaii beat Fresno State to win the WAC and Carlsbad went on to win the state 5-A championship by topping Rio Rancho 7-6. Rio Rancho eliminated Las Cruces High 6-4 in the Semis. Elsewhere in softball - In South Lake Tahoe, California, a girl’s softball coach has apologized after forcing eight players to drink soda out of one of the girl’s shoes. She was punishing the players for striking out in a game. She said she was teasing them at a slumber party after the game – but school officials call it ‘hazing’ and said they will investigate.
-Yeah – you know there’s something wrong when your Dr. Pepper tastes a little like Dr. Scholl’s.
And finally, here’s a new fad popping up on college campuses in England – called ‘Vodka Eyeballing’. Instead of drinking vodka shots…the students pour the alcohol into their eyes. It’s supposed to give you a buzz at breakneck speed – but doctors say it could also damage your eyes and leave you blind.
-Well – you’ve heard of being ‘blind drunk’. There you go.
