Today is National Anthem Day. The "Star Spangled Banner" became the U.S. National Anthem on March 3, 1931. Today is What If Cats and Dogs Had Thumbs Day, a time to be grateful pets can't open cans or refrigerators.
The 101 number one song of the day, originally entitled the “Dying Man” was supposed to be a Beach Boys’ song – but when they took a pass, the man who suggested it scored his biggest hit ever. He was working with the Beach Boys on a session when he came across a song by French composer Jacques Brel entitled “Le Moribond.” After recording it, they decided not to release it. Then the session player – who had previously recorded as a member of the Poppy Family – decided to record it himself after a friend of his suddenly passed away. It sat on a shelf in his basement for over a year until his paper boy heard it and thought it was great. That gave him the confidence to release it and on March 3, 1974 it was the number one song in America and went on to sell over 6 million copies worldwide – it’s today’s 101 number one song of the day for Terry Jacks (Seasons in the Sun)
Other stuff…
The Today Show did an undercover report – showing major retailers sell used underwear as new. People return lingerie to Victoria’s Secret…and they don’t ask if it was worn – they just retag it and put it on the rack. A former employee says if the returned underwear smells bad – they hang it in the back to air out a few days before reselling it. So the show went undercover – returning obviously worn underwear…and found it hanging back up in Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom’s and the Gap. They say it’s retail’s dirty little secret.
There were plenty of records that fell at the Winter Olympics. The Canadian team won the most gold medals ever…and the American team won the most total medals ever. One record you might not have heard about…they used the most condoms ever in a Winter Olympic village. The athletes started out with 100,000 condoms…but by the last weekend the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research had to send an emergency shipment of 8,500 more to get through the last couple days. What happens in the Olympic Village stays in the Olympic Village…
The good news about the bad economy: Experts are crediting the recession for fewer shark attacks. There were only 28 shark attacks in US waters last year, down from 41 the year earlier. Experts say it’s the economy…with fewer people taking vacations or driving to the beach -there were fewer people to attack.
