Everything you ever wanted to know about the dung beetle…

dung beetle

After months and months of testing…the horned dung beetle has won the distinction as the world’s strongest insect. The tiny dung beetle can pull 1,141 times its own weight in dung. The experts say that’s the equivalent of a 150-pound person lifting six full double-decker buses over their head. That fascinating fact got us started and we had to find out more about this incredible creature so we went to this website: http://www.thaibugs.com/Articles/dung%20beetle%20facts.html. And now you can too!

Today’s the start of the Sweet Sixteen round of March Madness. But do you really care anymore?

Today is National Letting Go of Stuff Day, a day to free up subconscious space.

Today is Pecan Day. George Washington planted pecan trees at Mount Vernon on this date in 1775. Some of these trees are still producing pecans today.

Today is Old New Year's Day, the beginning of the new year in Britain and the U.S. Colonies until 1751, when both adopted the Gregorian Calendar and the new year began on January 1st.

happy new year

Today’s 101 Number One Song of the Day was rooted in homesickness although the man that wrote it only briefly lived near the place which provided the inspiration. He was a member of a group formed in London where they developed a large fan base by performing in clubs throughout the city and opening for such headliners as Pink Floyd. Eventually, they landed a recording contract and headed to the states where they toured as the opening act for the Everly Brothers. And this is where they longed to be because, although they mostly grew up in England, they were sons of American parents. Soon they were the headliners when their first single landed at number one on March 25th, 1972. And this is your 101 number one song of the day – from America – “A Horse With No Name.”

Have you ever driven or walked past a restaurant…and you could smell the food? And you thought to yourself – ‘Wow – that smells good!’? Or not. Researchers now say food odor released into the air is a form of air pollution that could pose a risk to your health and the environment. For example, they found for every 1000 pounds of hamburger cooked over an open flame – there were 25-pounds of emissions – of possibly carcinogenic elements.

For you environmentally sensitive people out there…how green is your love-life? That’s the question asked by the author of the new book ‘Eco-Sex’. She says if you haven’t explored how your love life affects the environment – you really aren’t green. For example – she recommends against buying roses that have to be shipped thousands of miles to your town. She says there’s eco-friendly underwear made from sustainable bamboo. She says a first date – could be a bike ride together. And she even has the details on hand-cranked adult toys. Ah, sorry – but the only thing I’m hand-cranking…is ice cream on a Sunday afternoon.

In Connecticut – police got a tip that two men were about to rob a bank. They got the tip when the two men called the bank and told them to have a bag of money ready. When they arrived, the police were already there. The officers said the 27-year old man and his juvenile accomplice were …’not that bright’.

And get a load of this contraption –

flame throwing moped

A James Bond fan fed up with drivers cutting him up on his moped invented the ultimate gadget to gain his revenge - a 15ft flamethrower. Colin Furze, 30, from Stamford in Lincolnshire, spent a month converting the 60mph sports scooter in his back garden. "It's a lot of fun and when I fire the flames out the back it makes me feel just like James Bond," said Mr Furze. "The flames are pretty big and up to 15 feet long so you could definitely set fire to someone's car if you wanted to. "The only problem is it can get rather hot if you are riding the moped and blast the flames when the wind is in the wrong direction." Mr Furze, a plumber, initially tried fixing his road-rage weapon to a BMX bike and it worked so well he decided to try it on his moped. "It was quite tricky to make and the first version wouldn't fire the flames when the moped was moving," he said. "My second attempt kept setting fire to itself, but my third version works really well and I'm very pleased with it."
