The 101 number one song of the day made a very big impression on somebody who would soon make a huge impression on the entire world. The producer, Major Bill Smith liked the song as it was written with the exception of the guitar intro. He asked Delbert McClinton to play harmonica on the demo and everyone was pleased with the result. Later, when the song was a hit, the band was touring in England and ran into an up and coming British group. One of the members was struck by the harmonica intro and shortly thereafter he wrote a song with a similar sound. He was John Lennon, and the song was “Love Me Do.” The song that inspired it arrived at the top of the charts on March 10, 1962 for Bruce Channel – “Hey! Baby.”
Now to the airlines: Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse to fly, soon you may be seeing more cancellations on airport departure boards. Several airlines, including American and Continental, say they will cancel flights rather than risk paying stiff penalties for delaying passengers on the runway. Continental's CEO told investors Tuesday that the airline will opt to cancel flights rather than chance being fined. Other airlines are expected to follow suit. Under new federal guidelines that take effect next month, airlines can be fined up to $27,500 per passenger if a plane is stuck on the tarmac for longer than three hours. So instead of a lengthy delay, which you don’t want to happen, you get cancelled altogether – which is worse!
