Mike is going through dance withdrawal. Not really, but you can check out his moves on the you tube video if you haven’t already done so.
Today is Barbie Day, marking this date in 1959 when the doll went on sale in the U.S. More than 900-million Barbies have been sold, and still sell at the rate of about 120 dolls a minute. Today is Organize Your Home Office Day. It’s also Get Over it Day.
The 101 number one song of the day which became RCA’s fastest selling single of all time, had a distinctive article of clothing in the title but it was about much more than a piece of cloth. The singer wrote the song while recuperating from an injury suffered in Vietnam. He was a native New Mexican who served in the Air Force for four years. After his discharge, he learned to play the guitar and formed a band which played in bars around the state but he didn’t enjoy much success. So he went back into the military – this time the Army where he joined an elite group which inspired the song that was number one in America on March 9, 1966 – Staff Sargent Barry Sadler (Ballad of the Green Beret)
Here are a few things we didn’t get to today…a man marrying a cushion; ghosts for sale on the internet and road signs warning about “drunks” ahead.
A Japanese man showed he was one big softy when he married the love of his life - a giant cushion. Lee Jin-gyu has fallen head over heels for a Japanese 'dakimakura' - or hugging pillow - showing a life sized cartoon of his favorite sexy anime cartoon character Fate Testarossa. Now Jin, 28, has wed the pillow in a special ceremony in Tokyo after fitting it out with a wedding dress for the service in front of a local priest. "He is completely obsessed with this pillow and takes it everywhere," said one friend. "They go out to the park or the funfair where it will go on all the rides with him. "Then when he goes out to eat he takes it with him and it gets its own seat and its own meal," they added. Hugging pillows have become a huge hit in Japan as a way for teenage fans to get to grips with their favorite cartoon fantasy women.
Two bottled "ghosts" have sold for more than $2500 in an online auction in New Zealand. The ghosts, supposedly trapped inside two glass vials, were put up for bidding by Avie Woodbury in Christchurch. She said they were captured in her house during an exorcism. The spirits were trapped inside the vials with stoppers and then dipped in holy water, which she says "dulls the spirits' energy". She said they were the spirits of an old man who lived in the house during the 1920s, and a powerful, disruptive little girl who turned up after a Ouija board session. Since an exorcism at the property last July led to their capture, there has been no further spooky activity in the house, she said. Once an "exorcist's fee" has been deducted, the proceeds of the spirit sale will go to the animal welfare group the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The auction drew derision from some quarters, with one posting on the site declaring: "I have two spirits in bottles at home. "I think they are called Jim Beam and the other is Johnny Walker."
Road safety chiefs have put up traffic signs warning motorists of drunks in the road in a bid to reduce accidents. Mayor Petru Antal ordered the signs - saying 'Attention - Drunks', complete with an image of a reveller on his knees with a bottle - after despairing of accident figures in Pecica, Romania. He pointed out that drivers, through no fault of their own, are at risk of running over locals, who enjoy the town's bar and club scene to the point where they are unable to take proper care of themselves on the way home.
