The 101 Number One song of the Day has the distinction of being the shortest single in the rock era to reach the top.

It was written and recorded by a group known as the Gladiolas who were signed by Ernie Young who headed up the Excello label in Nashville. Their relationship and level of success was not so “Excello” said they parted company but Young kept the rights to their name so they needed a new one. The group’s bass player had recently seen an old car in a repair shop and they thought the it’s name sounded right for them so they borrowed it. The car was called Zodiac. And so Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs reached number one on November 21st, 1960 with a song that clocked in at all of 1 minute and 37 seconds. It’s Stay.
