The 101 number one song of the day was recorded in New Mexico by a group from New Mexico and it became the biggest single of that year.

The group was from Raton and they were in need of a lead singer. Norman Petty, who owned the famed studios in Clovis, knew a singer from Amarillo and suggested they get together. They decided to give it try and went on the road trying out different songs to add to their repertoire. One song in particular got an incredible response from audiences. The reaction was so great, they played it twice each show. Soon they recorded it and released it as a single. At first, it sold well only in the southwest but eventually it broke out and it arrived at number one on October 12, 1963 and stayed on top for five weeks. It’s today’s 101 number one song of the day – from Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs (Sugar Shack)

Listen for the replay and win!
