34 years ago today, the King of Rock and Roll died of a heart attack. As always, on the eve of the anniversary, thousands hold of vigil at Graceland.
Today is also National True Love Forever Day
The 101 number one song of the day was a rehash of an old Italian Love song and it became the biggest selling single of all time for one of the biggest selling solo artists of all time.
Worldwide sales of the record were over 20 million. It was huge here in America but it was even bigger in England. Because of copyright disputes over the original song which dated back to 1901, the record’s release overseas was delayed. By the time it finally was released over there the anticipation was so great it debuted on the British charts at number one where it remained for 8 weeks. Here in the states it stayed on top for 5 weeks and that is where it was on August 16, 1960. The Italian love song was “O Sole Mio” and this is what that became: “It’s Now or Never”
