History 101: A milestone in yacht racing on this date in 1851 as the schooner "America" was launched at 12th Street and the East River in New York City -- the yacht went on to win the "Hundred Guinea Trophy," later renamed in the boat's honor as “The America's Cup.”

Music History 101: May 3, 1968, a concert tour kicked off which featured the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who gave lectures when the band was not playing. Since most audiences were not receptive to the lectures, half the tour was cancelled. The headliners were the Beach Boys

The 101 number one song of the day was a “Mancunian Hat Trick.” If you’re wondering what that’s all about, you’ll read about it shortly.

The song was recorded by a band whose lead singer was a former child star in his native England. When he turned to music he was much more popular in America.  In fact, today’s featured song was never even released as a single in his home country. Now, back to the Mancunian Hat Trick – despite all the hoopla over the “Liverpool Sound,” the 101 number one song of the day was the third song in a row from a “Manchester, England” group to reach number one in America when it arrived at the top on May 1, 1965.  If you’re from Las Cruces, you’re a Las Crucen – people from Manchester are Mancunians. The two previous Mancunian songs were “I’m telling you now” from Freddie and the Dreamers, and “Game of Love” by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders and today – it’s another bunch of Mancunians: Herman’s Hermits and “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter.”  Later they made a movie with the same title.  Do you remember the movie?  Few do.
