Music History 101: 1968 – A rock and roll group named after a kind of steamroller performed their final concert in Long Beach, California.  The band’s name was Buffalo Springfield.

What do you do when you’re in a recording session with only five minutes left before your time is up? The group you’re about to hear made a record in record time.

Today’s 101 number one song of the day came together very quickly for producer Luther Dixon and record label owner Florence Greenberg who wrote the song on the spot and a group four teenage girls, by this time, seasoned pros despite their tender age recorded it in one take. It knocked former G.I. Elvis Presley from the top spot on May 5, 1962 and by coincidence it was a song about a current G.I. – it was the Shirelles  with “Soldier Boy.”
