The St. Paddy’s Day Parade in Las Cruces steps off at nine a.m. tomorrow from the 101 Gold studios at 101 Perkins.  Everyone is welcome (as long as you’re wearing green.)

Irish Fiddling Legend Paddy Jones visited the 101 Gold studios this morning and he’ll be performing tomorrow night at the Rio Grande Theater.  He’s a sample:

History 101: March 16th, 1802: Congress authorizes the establishment of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

1963: A trio released a song which reached #2 even though some radio stations banned it, fearing it was about smoking marijuana. Composer Peter Yarrow always contended it was "about a magic dragon named Puff." --- "Puff, the Magic Dragon." Peter, Paul, & Mary

The 101 number one song of the day was written and recorded by someone who seemed destined for superstardom in 1967 until something happened that changed everything.  It was without a doubt his year. One of his songs –Respect-was taken to the top by Aretha Franklin. Another song he co-wrote with Arthur Conley that actually used his name within - reached number two. And finally, the British pop weekly newspaper Melody Maker published their annual reader’s poll on September 23, 1967 and named him male vocalist of the year ending Elvis Presley’s eight year run. Then tragedy struck on December 7, 1967 when his private plane crashed in a lake in Madison, WI killing him and his band. All before most of America really knew who he was. On March 16, 1968 a song he’d recorded shortly before his death reached number one making it the nation’s first posthumous number one song and it’s today’s 101 number one song of the day for Otis Redding – (“Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay.”
