Elizabeth Taylor 1932-2011

Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor was born in London, England, on February 27, 1932. Although she was born an English subject, her parents were Americans, art dealers from St. Louis, Missouri (her father had gone to London to set up a gallery). Her mother had been an actress on the stage, but gave up that vocation when she married. Elizabeth lived in London until the age of seven, when the family left for the US when the clouds of war began brewing in Europe in 1939. They sailed without her father, who stayed behind to wrap up the loose ends of the art business.
The family relocated to Los Angeles, where Mrs. Taylor's own family had moved. Mr. Taylor followed not long afterward. A family friend noticed the strikingly beautiful little Elizabeth and suggested that she be taken for a screen test.

Her test impressed executives at Universal Pictures enough to sign her to a contract. Her first foray onto the screen was in There's One Born Every Minute (1942), released when she was ten. Universal dropped her contract after that one film, but Elizabeth was soon picked up by MGM.  She went on to a long and storied film career and was known as much for her many marriages as her acting.

Congressman Steve Pearce visited the 101 Gold studios this morning on his way to hosting a 9 a.m. town hall meeting at the Cineport 10 in Mesilla Valley Mall.  Yesterday he officially announced introduction of H.R. 1202, a bill to restart jobs in New Mexico’s once-thriving timber industry.  Pearce has continually advocated a “balanced approach” to logging—he opposes clear-cutting, and his two-page bill allows for the protection of the Mexican Spotted Owl in sanctuaries.  “I just think we need some common sense solutions” he explained.

He also expressed concern about the U. S. involvement in Libya saying that we’ve already asked too much of our military.

Today’s 101 Number One Song of the Day was the only major hit for a group of four men who didn’t have ANY hits until they added a fifth member and dropped their name which would become world famous – for somebody else. (It’s next) The guys had sung together in their high school choir and after graduating, went to New York to make a name for themselves. That name was the Supremes. But soon they decided on another name and three ladies from Detroit started using it. The name change was followed by a personnel addition. They added a woman by the name of Ruby Nash who became their lead singer. When they laid down the track for the song you’re about to hear it was the first time Ruby Nash had ever set foot in a recording studio. That song entered the Hot 100 on February 9, 1963 and six weeks later on March 23, it reached number one – for the group now known as Ruby and the Romantics _ “Our Day Will Come.”

Interesting news – radio listenership is up. That’s right – despite i-Pods and satellites and internet based service…regular conventional radio listenership is up 5% since 2005. Newspaper and television usage are both down during the same time…

You got me hooked!  I was visiting my sister in Tucson, twice in the past year and stumbled onto your station, like there is a lot to choose from in the southern New Mexico area, lol!  I look forward to your morning shows, it makes my day.  They really need a station like this in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame area, you put them to shame, your selection of music is fantastic!

Thanks, Frank!

And one more thing – We talked about the so-called “Super Moon” that we saw last weekend.  Here’s a shot of it rising over the Organs-

Enjoy.
