It is the beginning of the Lenten season. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a sign of mourning and repentance to God.
Yesterday was Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday where tradition requires adherents to wear silly hats.

Music History 101: And on March 9, 1987, Carole Klein was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in New York City. Most people knew her better as Carole King.
The 101 number one song of the day which became RCA’s fastest selling single of all time, had a distinctive article of clothing in the title but it was about much more than a piece of cloth. The singer wrote the song while recuperating from an injury suffered in Vietnam. He was a native New Mexican who served in the Air Force for four years. After his discharge, he learned to play the guitar and formed a band which played in bars around the state but he didn’t enjoy much success. So he went back into the military – this time the Army where he joined an elite group which inspired the song that was number one in America on March 9, 1966 – Staff Sargent Barry Sadler (Ballad of the Green Beret)
