This is Gertie.  She is about 4 months old and currently living at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley on Bataan Memorial West off Highway 70.  She needs a permanent home.

She’s a terrier mix and very huggable.  The Center opens today and each day at noon.

Perhaps one day Gertie can be trained to do all this -

Today is also National Re-Gifting Day.  Just make sure you don’t “re-gift” the same gift to the person who gave it to you in the first place.

Music History 101: December 17, 1955: Unable to sleep, this guitarist got up and wrote a song on a paper bag. Less than 48 hours later, he recorded it at Sun Records in Memphis. It would become the first song ever to reach #1 on the pop, country & western, and rhythm & blues music charts: "Blue Suede Shoes." Carl Perkins

The 101 number one song of the day was a “third” which made it a “first.” It was the third number one from the same album and that was the first time it ever happened.  The song was actually released as a single earlier than was planned. It was learned that Scepter Records was about to release a cover version of the same song by a singer named Nella Dodds. So even though the group you’re about to hear was already atop the charts with their second number one song from the album, the label decided to move up the release date to compete with the other version. It was no contest. Nella peaked at number 84 and during this week in December, 1964, this single…arrived at number one (Supremes – Come See About Me)

According to the seventh annual Most Secure U.S. Places to Live rankings from Farmers Insurance Group of Companies, Madison, Wisconsin, is the most secure U.S. community among large metropolitan areas. Olympia, Washington, is the most secure mid-size U.S. city, while the Lewiston, Idaho–Clarkston, Washington, areas rank as the most secure small town for the second consecutive year. The rankings took into consideration crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, housing depreciation, foreclosures, air quality, terrorist threats, environmental hazards, life expectancy and job loss numbers in 379 U.S. municipalities. The study divided the communities into three groups: large metropolitan areas, mid-size cities and small towns.   Good news for those of us in Las Cruces – The City of the Crosses came in at number 20 in the mid-size city category.

A Hutchinson, Kansas, man accused of trying to rape a 71-year-old woman was hospitalized for several days due to injuries the elderly woman inflicted on him with a frying pan. Investigators said Kevin Scott Funderburk, 25, was drunk when he approached the woman’s home Saturday morning and talked her into letting him inside by saying he was homeless and had nowhere else to seek shelter. Police said Funderburk attempted to hold the woman down and rape her, but she was able to break his grasp and defend herself. “She was fighting for her life,” Detective Sgt. John Moore said. “She beat him down with a frying pan.” Moore said police arrived just after 7 a.m. and found Funderburk “unconscious and lying in his own vomit.” He was in the hospital over the weekend getting his scalp stapled. Funderburk was charged with attempted rape, aggravated battery, criminal restraint and criminal damage to property.

101 Gold Nugget of Knowledge: A New York man said he has invented the perfect fashion accessory designed to keep low-riding pants sagging at just the right level. Andrew Lewis said his invention, which he calls “Subs,” fastens around the waist like a garter belt and holds onto the pants via expandable straps with clips at the end. “Sagging is a huge issue in my community,” he said. “I spent a lot of time observing and I noticed that even for saggers, there is a point which even they’re not comfortable with how their jeans were falling.” Lewis is selling the invention for $30 at some local stores and online at www.hatchventures.com.
