Now he’s doing Reality TV.  We don’t think Susana Martinez is headed in that direction.

The 101 number one song of the day was the biggest hit for a group that had nothing with the record but their name was on the label.  They were five teenage girls from Brooklyn who were discovered by Phil Spector. Spector heard a song written by Gene Pitney which was about to be recorded by El Paso native Vicki Carr. He knew it would be perfect for his new protéges but he was in LA and they were in New York. It was a race against time to get it out first so he hired a group of back up singers called the Blossoms headed by Darlene Love. Also on the single was a young percussionist named Sonny Bono. The record raced up the charts and landed at number one on November 3, 1962 – Vicki Carr’s version failed to chart. So today’s 101 number song is credited to a group who had virtually nothing to do with it except going out and promoting it. That group was the Crystals and this is the song (He’s A Rebel)

Other Stuff:

Thanks to Riis Gonzales, vice president for development, NMSU Foundation and Debbie Widger, executive director, NMSU Alumni Association for stopping by the 101 Gold studios this morning to announce the great news that the NMSU Foundation has raised $256,000,000.  The original goal was $125 million, then revised upward to $225 million which went on to be comfortably surpassed.  The money will be used to endow several chairs and scholarships as well as other projects for New Mexico Station University.
