In a way, we perpetuate our youth every day because of the music we play at 101 Gold. But whoever was the originator of this “day” did it to pay homage to the man that presented the music to us every day when we were much younger. As host of American Bandstand, Dick Clark introduced us to the artists who perform these great tunes.
It is also Strange Names Day and Go Mousseless Day to let your hair do its own thing. Some would call it “bed-head.”
History 101: On this date in 1782, America's War of Independence came to an end with the signing of a peace treaty with Great Britain.
The above painting depicts John Jay, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Henry Laurens and William Temple Franklin in Benjamin West’s 1783-1784 painting of the treaty signing. The British commissioners refused to pose, and the painting was never finished. Sore losers!
Music History 101: November 30,1996 A singer whose birth name was Herbert Khaury died after performing the song that made him famous at a benefit concert in Minneapolis. He was better known as Tiny Tim: “Tiptoe Thru’ The Tulips”
Yikes!
The 101 number one song of the day required spoonfeeding, mothering, big sistering and even reprimanding just to get it recorded. And that’s not all – something else one rarely sees in a recording studio was brought in to finish the job. Ellie Greenwich was the writer and she found the four girls who made up today’s featured group difficult to work with. Lead singer Mary Weiss was 16 at the time and the microphone in her face inhibited her. She was also quite emotional and she was encouraged to let that emotion flow freely. Listen closely and you will hear her crying as she sings. The song was number one on November 30, 1964. Oh – and that thing rarely seen in a recording studio? It was a big ass motorcycle. It’s the Shangri-Las (Leader of the Pack)
Other stuff:
An annual tally of items in the beloved 12 Days of Christmas song by PNC Financial Services Group comes to $96,824 this year, up a whopping 11% from 2009. It’s the second-highest jump in cost in the 27 years PNC has done the tally and the largest percentage increase since 2003. The price accounts for the 364 items chronicled in the song. Non-purists who ignore the repetition in the song would shell out only $23,439, up 9% from a year ago. Blame commodity prices in part on the increase - the cost of Five Golden Rings is up 30%. Nine Ladies Dancing saw the biggest dollar increase from 2009 at $820, up 15%. However, the cost of Three French Hens has more than tripled over last year, at $150. Only four items — Pear Tree, Calling Birds, Geese-a-Laying and Maids-a-Milking — were the same price as in 2009. The cost of purchasing all the Twelve Days of Christmas items online is higher than traditional brick-and-mortar stores, with a total of $34,336.
Outrageous!

101 Gold Nugget of Knowledge: A pair of New York college students said their “Dreidelpalooza” event is aimed at setting a Guinness World Record. The juniors said the event will raise funds for the campus organization Students Helping Students.
A Washington woman who celebrated her 107th birthday today says the secret to her longevity involves plenty of Guinness stout. Betsy Stanford said her diet includes “everything they say not to eat,” including “juicy steaks” and “pork chops.” Stanford said she enjoys smoothies made from Guinness stout mixed with Ensure, vanilla flavoring and nutmeg “if (the stout) is too bitter.” “I drink stout. It’s good for you, baby!” Stanford said. She said hard work is also key to long life. “Go to bed early, get up early. Feel good and fresh and go to work on time,” she added.
Johnny Depp says Disney was less than thrilled with his portrayal of Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” even though it was good enough for an Oscar nod. Depp broke the news in an interview with rocker Patti Smith for the January issue of Vanity Fair magazine. Depp said Disney “couldn’t stand” his Sparrow and one person there even asked if Sparrow was gay. Depp told the Disney executive “all my characters are gay,” and he said that “really made her nervous.” Depp’s next role is in the movie “The Tourist” with Angelina Jolie. It opens December 10th.
